All materials are provided for all courses. A minimum of four students is required for every course. Please note that “open” courses are suitable for any age, including Moms! Registration form is available to download at the bottom of the page. Return completed form with payment before September 24 to guarantee enrolment. Elementary Level

Four Seasons Landscape Painting
This course consists of four workshops. Students will produce four different landscapes, one from each season. Focus will be on the Canadian landscape.

Painting for Primary Students
Children love to paint. This introductory course will expose them to techniques in watercolour, acrylic, resist and tempera paints.

Artist of the Month
This class is held once a month. Student will be introduced to ten well-known artists and learn about the different periods of art history and various media. Except for December and June, it is held on the last Wednesday of the month.

Paint a Lighthouse
In this two-session workshop students will paint a lighthouse landscape in acrylic on canvas.

Nature Drawing: Birds and Botany
This six-week drawing course introduces techniques for drawing nature. Students will learn to observe detail and produce accurate drawings.

Monet, A Field of Tulips (Open)
Create a copy of Monet’s painting in acrylic on canvas. This class teaches techniques for painting impressionist landscape.

VanGogh, Almond Blossoms (Open)
Create an acrylic painting on canvas inspired by VanGogh’s Almond Blossoms.

Custom Classes
If you have a small group that would like an art course, please inquire. You choose dates, times and subject matter. For your calculations, pricing is based on $10 per student per hour. Certain courses have a material fee in addition.

Highschool Level

A minimum of four students is required in each class. Materials are provided, however, a set of acrylic paint for home assignments is required.

Grade Nine
Dates: First Friday of each month

This course provides a foundation for further study in the visual arts. Students will experiment with different media as they explore the art produced by a variety of cultures. They will learn to analyze various forms of art and place them in an historical context. There is a strong emphasis on the elements and principles of design, colour theory and art history. Students meet with the instructor once a month. The majority of the studio component of the course is done independently between classes. Students (and parents) should be prepared to incorporate art homework into their daily schedule for the duration of the class.
Course meets requirements for a high school art credit.

Grade Ten
Dates: Second and Fourth Friday of each month, September to January
Time: 1:00-3:00

This course will allow students to develop skills acquired in the grade nine course. Classes will balance art history, new media and a refined application of the principles and elements of design. Students will develop drawing and painting skills and learn to analyze works of art and the relationship between form and content. Students meet with the instructor twice per month. The majority of the studio component of the course is done independently between classes. Students (and parents) should be prepared to incorporate art homework into their daily schedule for the duration of the class.

Grade Eleven
Dates: Second and fourth Friday of each month, February to June
Time: 1:00-3:00

This course will allow students to develop skills acquired in grade nine and ten art. Students will take initiative in developing their own theme and explore it through various media. The course will include an extensive study of design and illustration, focusing on composition and the principles of design. In addition students will learn to analyze works of art and discuss how meaning is achieved through the form of the art. Art history will form a major component of the course. Students meet with the instructor twice per month. The majority of the studio component of the course is done independently between classes. Students (and parents) should be prepared to incorporate art homework into their daily schedule for the duration of the class.

Classes offered 2011-2012

Grade Nine

Drawing Basics for Young Beginners (K to Grade 3)
Four sessions, one hour each.
A fun and simple way to learn the basics of drawing. Students will learn techniques that will help them draw realistically and confidently.

Drawing Basics for Older Students (Grades 4-8)
Four sessions, one hour each.
Ideal for beginners and experienced students who want to brush up on their drawing skills. Course covers techniques for drawing realistically and introduces perspective and shading.

Drawing People (Grades 4-8)
Three sessions, two hours each.
An in-depth study of drawing the human figure using the gesture technique. This technique makes it easy to draw even the most difficult poses. Includes portraiture.

Primary Media Exploration (K to Grade 3)
Six sessions, one hour each.
This “just for fun” course introduces young children to the joy of artistic media. Students will experiment with chalk and oil pastel, acrylic paint, watercolour and sculpture. Paint shirts are provided.

Drawing Horses (Grades 4-8)
Four sessions, one hour each.
Students will learn techniques for drawing horses realistically in various poses.

Winter Landscape Painting (Grades 4-8)
Three sessions, one hour each.
Paint a winter landscape. Students will learn basic painting techniques and bring home a masterpiece.

Lighthouse Painting (Grades 4-8)
Four sessions, two hours each.
Students will learn basic paintings techniques and apply them to a landscape painting of a lighthouse.

Still Life Painting with Mom (Grades 4-8)
Three sessions, two hours each.
Moms, join your kids and discover the joy of painting. You will learn basic painting techniques and apply them to a still life floral painting. (Yes, you can do it!)

Impressionist Landscape Painting with Mom (Grades 4-8)
Four sessions, two hours each.
A study of Impressionist painting techniques. Students will paint a copy of Monet’s “A field of Tulips”

Perspective for Primary Students
Three sessions, one hour each.
A drawing course for younger beginners. Students will improve their drawing skills as they learn four methods of creating perspective.

Painting for Primary Students
Six sessions, one hour each.
Young beginners will learn painting techniques and apply them to various subject matter. A fun and simple way to learn to paint confidently.

Custom classes are also available for groups of four or more. You determine subject matter and length of class.
